OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERASailing past Inchcolm Abbey. A medieval abbey located on the island of Inchcolm in the Firth of Forth, Scotland. It was founded in the 12th century during the episcopate of Gregoir, Bishop of Dunkeld. Later tradition placed it even earlier, in the reign of King Alexander I of Scotland (1107–24). The Abbey has the most complete surviving remains of any Scottish monastic house. The cloisters, chapter house, warming house, and refectory are all complete, and most of the remaining claustral buildings survive in a largely complete state.

Chamber pot in the bedroom of a restored house in the Open Air Museum at Bad Windsheim. The outdoor museum, opened in 1979, is just south of the city. It has more than 80 rural buildings that have been moved here to display the cultural heritage of more than six centuries in the region. Covering 100 acres of farmland it is split into seven villages representing different time periods and areas of the Franconian region of Bavaria.

  1. Any unifying sub-theme here – as well as being ‘Berlin’? I’m always struck by the way the urban form ‘contains’ or forms strictures or boundaries on nature in European cities. My perception of Canadian urban life is one of ‘wild’ being nearby and ready to assert itself at the first opportunity.
